Due to improved understanding of the physiology of heart disease and the pharmacologic effect of anesthetic drugs themselves, anesthesia for patients with heart disease has been steadily safer over time. The clinical perception that patients with heart illness tolerate anesthesia and surgery well is supported by a small number of data, but reports are not in short supply. Because findings from similar patient groups cannot be compared, data collection is challenging. Only a minor portion of the entire surgical procedure involves anesthesia. The preoperative phase for a patient with severe cardiac disease is often somewhat prolonged. When he is prepared, he receives anesthetic medicine and is put under anesthesia. These preoperative events are followed by the surgical procedure. The postoperative period, with all of its physiologic changes, completes the surgical experience.
