Post lumbar puncture (LP) headache, sometimes referred to as post dural puncture headache, is a frequent side effect of diagnostic LP. It can also happen after spinal anesthesia or, more frequently, with an unintentional dural puncture during an effort to insert an epidural catheter. The headache is frequently accompanied by neck stiffness, photophobia, nausea, or subjective hearing difficulties and is typically positional (worse while standing, better when resting flat). Postdural puncture headaches (PDPHs) are the most prevalent name for postural headaches that occur after procedures that compromise meningeal integrity. This nomenclature is used in this section and has been formally adopted by the International Classification of Headache Disorders. However, the term "postural" has come under fire as being imprecise and misleading, leading to the suggestion of the alternative term "meningeal puncture headache" (MPH), which readers may start to hear more often.
